Teacher Marovavy takes care of her students in her classroom in Madagascar. Understanding the struggles her students face to get to school due to the extreme impacts of the climate and nature crisis faced in the region is a key part of her job.
“For students, it’s a bit of a hassle because some of them live far away [from the school]. There are students who can't study, and classes are often interrupted when the summer season arrives.”
Community Case Study
2021 saw the HIH Madagascar team provide programming that included healthcare, agricultural training, reforestation, and education, in addition to responding to the climate-induced famine and COVID-19 emergencies. Typically, the land produces one rice crop per year and is dependent on rain for a successful crop harvest.
HIH sustainable agriculture intervention and training resulted in three harvests this year, and the agroforestry intervention helped families grow fruit trees and vegetables in their backyard, even in the midst of climate-induced famine.
